After a long hiatus, imposed on us by that pesky pandemic, we are thrilled to announce that our 10×10 Minute Play Event is returning this year!
Doubtless, you have all been writing prolifically throughout your various lockdowns and have numerous short plays that have been honed and polished to a fine degree, ready for the stage. Well, we would be delighted to receive them.
James Horgan, event co-ordinator for the Cork Arts Theatre, said, “This event has been running since 2010 and has continually surpassed all the expectations we had when we began. That success is a result of the combined talents of numerous writers, directors, performers, and crew who work as a team to bring these exciting and entertaining new works to the stage. We are really looking forward to creating something special with that community of artists again this year.”
- As per previous years, all submissions will be read by our panel of readers and a shortlist of 10 plays selected. Those 10 plays will then be staged during our performance week later this year.
- Plays should be no more than 10 minutes in duration and should have a simple setting (minimal props and furniture). Other than that, we are open to plays of all genres – comedy, tragedy, farce, fantasy, horror…
- The one topic we would probably not encourage though is anything related to lockdowns or the pandemic in general. It’s not totally ruled out but, perhaps, you could search for inspiration elsewhere as we are all undoubtedly a bit jaded by the subject at this stage.
- The 10 minute maximum duration is important, so, if you’re unsure of how long your play runs, the easiest way to gauge it is to do a live reading. This is always a useful exercise as it can also bring to light any issues with dialogue or plot. A rough guide is 7 or 8 pages of double-spaced dialogue.
Important Note: Due to the huge level of interest in this year’s event, we can oly accept a maximum of 2 plays from each author.
Plays must be submitted by Friday 2nd September, 2022 and should be sent as a Word document or PDF to: theatre@corkartstheatre.com with the subject line 10×10 Submission 2022. Please do not submit plays to any other Cork Arts Theatre email address.
Please note too that the 10×10 Minute Play Event is a fund-raising event for the Cork Arts Theatre and, as such, we are not in a position to pay royalties should your play be chosen for performance.
