Word Against The Word

Written & performed by Keith Dunphy
Directed by Aoife Monks

A PLAY ABOUT SHOW BUSINESS, DYSLEXIA & THE QUEST TO PLAY A KING

Keith Dunphy left Waterford for RADA with one ambition: to perform Shakespeare in his own Irish working-class voice. Living with dyslexia, he navigates an industry built around language while pursuing his dream role — Richard II, the English king who landed in Waterford in 1399.

Blending autobiography, live performance, multimedia, soundscape, and projected video, Word Against The Word transforms dyslexia from obstacle into theatrical language itself. The result is a moving, funny, and highly accessible production that connects deeply with audiences far beyond.

“Heart-breaking and hilarious at the same time”
“Incredible!! Very moving. We talked about it the whole way home”
“I’m dyslexic and it spoke to me like no other play has”
“An insight into a different world”
