SUMMARY:Off the Meter\, On the Record
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 10th October @ 8pm\n\nOff The Meter\, On The Record\nA play by John McDonagh\nA comedic glimpse into 35 years behind the wheel of a New York City yellow taxi\, Off The Meter is a pithy social commentary from New York’s most recognizable cab driver about life spent behind the wheel. John McDonagh\, veteran radio host\, has condensed thirty-plus years of activism\, reality show antics and observation into a love song to the city that never sleeps. \nFrom the plight of the NYC homeless to the crazy demands of Upper East Side matrons\, McDonagh brings the audience from laughter to tears and back again faster than the apparition of umbrella dealers on a rainy day. Throw in his tales of brushes with the rich and famous\, and you have Irish storytelling at its best. \nResiding in Queens\, New York City\, John’s parents were from Donegal and Tyrone\, and he spent his childhood going back and forth between Queens and his uncle’s sheep farm outside of Pettigo\, Donegal. He began his career as a cab driver after serving in the US army in Germany during the Vietnam war. \nOff the Meter represents the culmination of a forty year career of driving a yellow cab in New York City\, while trying to make a difference in the world. A glimpse into the changing landscape of the city from the unique position of behind the wheel of an NYC yellow cab\, and takes the audience from tears to hilarity in the speed of a New York minute. Initially presented during the NYC Fringe Festival\, it had a successful sold out run at the Irish Repertory Theatre in New York City\, and was directed by Irish Rep founder Ciaran O’Reilly. Shown in theaters in Boston and New York\, it also received the First Origin Irish Theatre Spirit Award in January of 2022 and was shown in the Sean O’Casey Theatre in Dublin before capacity crowds as part of the O’Casey Festival\, where it was very well received.\nWhen not performing the play\, John co-hosts a weekly radio show with Malachy McCourt on WBAI\, 99.5 FM in NYC every Sunday. He is a board member of the Irish American Writers and Artists\, and has featured on the BBC program Steven Fry in America\, Top Gear with Richard Hammond\, and The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. \nA Q&A will take place after the show with guest Conal Creedon.\n\nStephen Fry – ” My Fellow Cabbie- The best and most articulate guide I have ever had”\nRichard Hammond – ” John McDonagh is faster than a New York Minute” \nNew York Times –  “The Bard of Gridlock” \nNew York Daily News – ” John takes Passengers and theatre goers on one hell of a ride” \nIrish Echo – ” Rip- Roaring -Side Spitting -Tongue in check one man play” \nNew York Irish Arts – ” “Off The Meter” offers a topsy-turvy journey through the New York streets” \nWoman Around Town – “Had Mark Twain driven a yellow cab instead of a riverboat\, his stories might’ve been like those of populist raconteur John McDonagh” \nThe New Yorker – “he’s an unfailingly affable raconteur… It’s all fascinating stuff” \nThe Epoch Times -“An absorbing portrait of a city and society in continual flux\, as told by someone who has lived through it\, Off the Meter\, on the Record makes for an extremely satisfying journey.” \nTheaterScene – “uproarious and moving” \nTheatre’s Leiter Side – “Hilarious…It’s hard to think of anyone who could who could do justice to the New York cabby’s life better than John McDonagh.” \nCurtain Up – ” it’s a gem” \nTickets: €15\, Concessions €12\n*Booking fees apply. \n \n

SUMMARY:JUMP!?
DESCRIPTION: Tuesday 17th – Saturday 21st October @ 8.00pm\n\nJUMP!?\nWritten and performed by Pauline O’Driscoll\nDirected by Karen Minihan\n\nA Middle-Aged\, Coming-Of-Age play.\nRaunchy\, Hormonal Comedy \nRecommended age 16+. Adult Themes & Sexual References. \nMonica is on the edge\, literally! She’s had enough\, of being nice and reasonable and sensible\, not to mention her temperamental fffing washing machine. She wants to scream and shout. She wants more! \nA searingly truthful\, but delightfully comic leapfrog through the taboo minefields of puberty\, menstruation\, fertility\, infertility\, the pressure on women to reproduce\, the choice not to\, fertility treatments\, middle aged sex\, vaginal atrophy and the hunt for the perfect cocktail… of hormones. \n“Something has to change… to jump or not to jump that is the question!”\n“Am I mad?… No! I’m hor-mental!” \nConsummate actor Pauline O’Driscoll is best known on screen for Mustard\, Sisters\, Smalltown\, The Young Offenders and on stage for solo plays Seven Ages of MAM which she co-wrote and You Have It All Backwards both of which had sell out runs at Cork Arts Theatre. Jump!? is Pauline’s first solo self-penned play. \nWriter and artistic director of Playacting Theatre\, Karen Minihan has an extensive back catalogue of projects ranging from small\, intimate\, innovative productions to large\, all-inclusive\, community spectacles. She is also author of the book & subsequent show Extraordinary Ordinary Women\, which she and Pauline continue to tour to the many corners of West Cork and beyond. \nWhat the critics say about Seven Ages of MAM: \n“MUST SEE SHOW… wondrously inventive … hilariously detailed … O’Driscoll can call down the angels in a light high tessitura – a whisper away from silence\, and she can … roar like a banshee. …….. master of pause and sudden tangent\, the surprise monologue\, the squirm of embarrassment\, the language of love and forgiveness and letting go. What O’Driscoll brings even more than humour is sudden abiding grief. And what she gets more than grief is life-affirming humour\, and what she gets most is utter exhaustion … No\, she’s of a piece. This is consummately acted\, wholly believable\, the most original riff on the Seven Ages I’ve seen … in short\, SEE IT” – Simon Jenner\, FringeReview \n“The audience hung on every word and went willingly on a roller coaster ride of emotions masterfully orchestrated by Pauline O’Driscoll … a terrific show\, funny\, heart-rending and jam-packed full of relevance and social commentary … a powerful\, beautifully nuanced\, mesmerizing performance”  – Denis Walsh\, Listowel Advertiser \nTickets: Preview €10\, Standard €15\n*Booking fees apply.\nDiscounts available for students and groups of 6+. Please contact Box Office. \n \nThis production is part of the Creative Empowerment Award supported by Cork Arts Theatre and The Community Foundation Ireland.

SUMMARY:The Comedy Improvised Murder Mystery
DESCRIPTION: Thursday 26th to Saturday 28th October @ 8.00pm\n\nThe Comedy Improvised Murder Mystery\n\nStarring Laura O’Mahony\, John McCarthy\, Laura Harte\, Annette Roche and Adrian Scanlan\nDevised by James Horgan\n \nThe Comedy Improvised Murder Mystery Gang are back again with their hilarious ‘off the cuff’ antics at the Cork Arts Theatre from Thursday 26th October. \nThe show is entirely improvised and with no script to fall back on the actors must create the entire plot with its many twists and turns on the spot. As usual\, things get out of hand pretty quickly with deadly (and hilarious) consequences. \nThe audience play their part each night too as they will secretly decide beforehand who the unfortunate victim and the mysterious murderer will be. And they will also provide hilarious ‘secrets’ that the cast read out at random moments to add mayhem and mirth to the proceedings. All of this is completed before the show starts so that the audience can then sit back\, relax and enjoy the ensuing mayhem. \nBringing the various characters to life each evening is the task for the very talented Cork cast members. Their experience in comedy improvisation will ensure that the audience won’t have time to catch their breath. \nThe production is devised by Cabal Theatre Company director\, James Horgan\, who says of the show\, “Due to both its improvised nature and the audience ‘secrets’ the show is completely different each time it’s performed. ‘The gang’ are attending another of their infamous Halloween parties but\, tragically\, it will be the last party for one of them! Who will the victim be? And who is the dastardly murderer? No-one knows\, especially not the cast!” \nSo\, with audience suggestions\, random musical cues and no script in sight\, ‘The Comedy Improvised Murder Mystery’ is\, once again\, set to be a deliciously chaotic and hilarious evening’s entertainment. \nTickets sell out very quickly for this show so we advise booking as early as possible. \nAnd please note\, that the show is only suitable for persons aged 16 and over. \nTickets: €18\, Groups of 8 or more €14 per person \nAdministration fee on phone and online bookings.
