Although they can no longer make memories\, you can still relish the moment you share with them. \nDolores\, who has been Artistic director of Cork Arts Theatre for over twenty years\, trained as an Actress with the Lyric in Belfast. She is responsible for many of the innovations at Cork Arts Theatre: Cork Rep\, the Emerging Artists programme\, the Lunch/Supper seasons and the Creative Empowerment Programme. Dolores has directed over 120 plays including Over the Pub\, The Cage\, We Were There\, and The Good Doctor. Joņevs works as a copywriter and\, since 2002\, he has also worked as a reviewer and translator from French. Joņevs is best known for his debut novel Doom 94 which was a bestseller upon its release in 2013. \n“…this is not just a book for metalheads or for those who are interested in the history of music\, it is also for anyone interested in an authentic\, simple\, unpretentious\, and witty story embedded in a post-socialist country.” — Branko Prlja  \nDaina Tabūna (1985) is a Latvian prose writer. The first prize is €2000. The winner also receives a week’s residency at the Anam Cara artist retreat in West Cork\, a featured reading at the Cork International Short Story Festival (with four-night hotel stay and full board) and publication of their winning story in Southword. This occasion is an opportunity to hear the 2022 winning story “Infestato” by E.M. Hughes. \nE.M. Hughes is a writer and editor making a living offering communications advice in the public and voluntary sector. Having previously worked in grocery stores\, pubs\, hotels\, bookstores\, call centres and banks in five different countries\, he is happy to earn his keep writing under other people’s names – but happiest when writing under his own. His articles have appeared in the Berkeley Political Review\, The Daily Californian\, and the Newsletter of the European Union and the Montesquieu Instituut. Hughes resides in Utrecht with his wife and newborn and is completing a collection of stories about working life. \nThe AKO Caine Prize for African Writing is a literature prize awarded to an African writer of a short story published in English. The Prize was launched in 2000 to encourage and highlight the richness and diversity of African writing by bringing it to a wider audience internationally. The focus on the short story reflects the contemporary development of the African storytelling tradition. \nIdza Luhumyo was born in Mombasa\, Kenya\, and holds a law degree from University of Nairobi. She is the inaugural winner of the Margaret Busby New Daughters of Africa Award (2020) and winner of the Short Story Day Africa Prize (2021). As usual\, things get out of hand pretty quickly with deadly (and hilarious) consequences. \nThe audience must play their part each night too and they will secretly decide beforehand who the unfortunate victim and the mysterious murderer will be. And they will also provide hilarious ‘secrets’ that the cast read out at random moments to add mayhem and mirth to the proceedings. All of this is completed before the show starts so that the audience can then sit back\, relax and enjoy the ensuing mayhem. \nBringing the various characters to life each evening is the task for the very talented Cork cast members. Their experience in comedy improvisation will ensure that the audience won’t have time to catch their breath. \nThe production is devised by Cabal Theatre Company director\, James Horgan\, who says of the show\, “Due to both its improvised nature and the audience ‘secrets’ the show is completely different each time it’s performed. ‘The gang’ are attending another of their infamous Halloween parties but\, tragically\, it will be the last party for one of them! Who will the victim be? And who is the dastardly murderer? It presents a masterly\, exaggerated picture not only of the playwright himself but of his whole household\, his court\, his admirers\, his lifestyle and his era. \nThe plot depicts a few days in the life of the successful and self-obsessed light comedy actor Garry Essendine as he prepares to travel for a touring commitment in Africa. Amid a series of events bordering on farce\, Garry has to deal with women who want to seduce him\, placate both his long suffering secretary and his wife\, cope with a crazed young playwright\, and overcome his impending mid-life crisis.
