Nelson Mandela was freed; the first female Irish president was inaugurated and the worst song of all time was composed entitled ‘Give it a lash Jack’. But these events are irrelevant to Oisín and Gráinne\, two social misfits\, as they attempt to survive life approaching Leaving Cert. \nBecause there is something at the heart of Kilthomas… you can breathe it in the air. \nAn old legend. A dark history set to repeat itself. It is not because of the briars\, jagged rocks and dark terrain that no one walks down to the faery ring. People have disappeared without a trace. \nSomething memorable happens in this quiet town. It is the night of their final year celebrations and the students’ transition into the next phase of their lives. As the students of Kilthomas Community School sweat out their frustrations to the sounds of MC Hammer and INXS\, the party intensifies. \nSomeone goes missing. \nAnd only a diary is found. \nMIGHTY OAK PRODUCTIONS\nThe Misfit Mythology is the second play\, alongside Gone Full Havisham to be produced by Mighty Oak Productions. A company founded in January 2019 focusing on the production of new work in Ireland. \nThe Misfit Mythology is the second play by writer Irene Kelleher whose first play\, Mary and Me\, received much critical acclaim at the Brighton and Edinburgh Fringe and enjoyed a Nationwide Irish tour and was nominated for a Bobby Award. The play is published by Oberon. \n“Kelleher is an exceptionally talented writer.” – BROADWAY BABY ★★★★★\n“Written with huge delicacy and skill… Kelleher marks herself out as a writer to watch.” – THE STAGE ★★★★\n“Both in writing and performance\, Kelleher is light years ahead of much of the posse.” – THE ARTS REVIEW ★★★★\n \nTHE MISFIT MYTHOLOGY\nThe play is directed by Killian Collins and it is Killian and Irene’s second time collaborating on a project. The first being The Turn of the Screw which enjoyed a very successful run at Smock Alley Theatre and The Everyman. \nTwo actors play the two protagonists\, Gráinne and Oisín\, amongst a host of other characters. The Misfit Mythology is a story that is very Irish\, set 28 years ago at a time when Ireland was struggling to transition and to keep up. Small town Ireland where the Saw Doctor’s ‘I used to love her’ trumps ‘New Kids on the Block’. \nThe play will bring you on a sometimes hilarious\, sometimes unsettling\, nostalgic journey through small town Ireland in the 1990s\, where every town has its secrets. \n  \nThis production is made possible by the Cork Arts Theatre and the Arts Council Emerging Artists Programme. \n“I applied for the Cork Arts Theatre Emerging Artists Programme as it is a fantastic opportunity to stage new work. It is an honour to be able to premiere ‘The Misfit Mythology’ in my hometown under my own production company. The intimate nature of the theatre is ideal for this play as the two main characters are in direct dialogue with the audience. Audiences also get to vote for their favourite play of the evening which adds to the sense of occasion. \nWe are delighted to be able to say that this event has grown from its humble beginnings to become one of the most popular shows in our annual programme. There was huge interest again this year from writers both nationally and internationally with 106 plays submitted. These then had to be whittled down to just 10 which was not an easy task. However\, the final ten plays are wonderful examples of what can be achieved on stage in a short space of time with a well-crafted script. \nWe would like to thank all of the actors\, directors and crew who will be working hard to bring these wonderful stories to life in the run-up to opening night on the 15th October. The event continues to be an important fund-raiser for the Cork Arts Theatre and it wouldn’t be possible without everyone giving of their time so generously. You now have 4 opportunities to see the funniest show of the year!! \nNow in its 9th year\, the show is entirely improvised and with no script to fall back on the actors must create the entire plot with its many twists and turns on the spot. As usual\, things get out of hand pretty quickly with deadly (and hilarious) consequences. \nThe audience must play their part each night too and they will secretly decide beforehand who the unfortunate victim and the mysterious murderer will be. And they will also provide hilarious ‘secrets’ that the cast read out at random moments to add mayhem and mirth to the proceedings. All of this is completed before the show starts so that the audience can then sit back\, relax and enjoy the ensuing mayhem. \nBringing the various characters to life each evening is the task for the very talented Cork cast members. Their experience in comedy improvisation will ensure that the audience won’t have time to catch their breath. \nThe production is devised by Cabal Theatre Company director\, James Horgan\, who says of the show\, “Due to both its improvised nature and the audience ‘secrets’ the show is completely different each time it’s performed. This year ‘the gang’ are attending a Halloween party at a spooky mansion but\, tragically\, it will be the last party for one of them! Who will the victim be? And who is the dastardly murderer?
