SUMMARY:10x10 Minute Play Event
DESCRIPTION:[cmsmasters_row data_width=”fullwidth” data_padding_left=”5″ data_padding_right=”5″ data_top_style=”default” data_bot_style=”default” data_color=”default”][cmsmasters_column data_width=”1/1″ data_border_style=”default”][cmsmasters_text]\n10 New Plays\, 100 Minutes of Great Theatre\n\nTuesday 15th to Saturday 19th October @ 8pm   \n“Our very popular short play event celebrates its 10th year!”\nEstablished in 2010\, our 10 x 10 Minute Play Event celebrates 10 years of great performances and the premieres of dozens of new plays in that time. \nThe event has proved immensely popular with audiences and performers alike over the years and\, once again\, there are ten mini-plays each evening with themes ranging from high comedy to more serious plotlines so there something to suit all tastes. Audiences also get to vote for their favourite play of the evening which adds to the sense of occasion. \nWe are delighted to be able to say that this event has grown from its humble beginnings to become one of the most popular shows in our annual programme. There was huge interest again this year from writers both nationally and internationally with 106 plays submitted. These then had to be whittled down to just 10 which was not an easy task. However\, the final ten plays are wonderful examples of what can be achieved on stage in a short space of time with a well-crafted script. \nWe would like to thank all of the actors\, directors and crew who will be working hard to bring these wonderful stories to life in the run-up to opening night on the 15th October. The event continues to be an important fund-raiser for the Cork Arts Theatre and it wouldn’t be possible without everyone giving of their time so generously. Our audiences\, too\, deserve our sincere thanks as\, each year\, they attend the event in great numbers\, with most performances selling out! \nWe are looking forward to another week of great theatre with a wealth of fabulous Cork talent at\, what we like to call\, ‘The Little Theatre with a Big Heart’.” \nHere are the 10 plays that will be performed in this year’s 10×10 Minute Play Event at the Cork Arts Theatre. \nCongratulations to the successful writers who had their plays chosen from the record number of 106 plays entered this year… \n\n– “You Can Never Outrun Your Past” by Michael Manley\n– “Apocalypse Radio” by Kelly O’Doherty\n– “New Romantics” by Chloe Murphy\n– “Bucket List” by Michael Ryan\n– “Hungry For You” by Dominic Cogan\n– “Trapped” by Barry Wood\n– “Life After Death” by Kate Moore\n– “Dawn Raid” by Eithne Horgan\n– “Cat Got Your Tongue” by Zoe Conlon\n– “A New Script” by Jill Brewer\n\nTickets: €12\nAdministration fee on phone and online bookings. \nNote for Online Bookings: Once your booking is complete\, please either print your tickets at home and bring them with you\, or present them on your phone at the box office on arrival and they will print them for you. \n[/cmsmasters_text][cmsmasters_button shortcode_id=”a61ya833j” button_link=”https://www.ticketsource.eu/corkartstheatre/events” button_target=”blank” button_text_align=”left” button_style=”cmsmasters_but_bg_hover” button_font_weight=”bold” button_font_style=”default” button_text_transform=”none” button_border_style=”default” button_bg_color=”#b58e4f” button_text_color=”#ffffff” button_bg_color_h=”#000000″ button_text_color_h=”#ffffff” animation_delay=”0″]BOOK NOW[/cmsmasters_button][/cmsmasters_column][/cmsmasters_row]

SUMMARY:The Misfit Mythology
DESCRIPTION:[cmsmasters_row data_color=”default” data_bot_style=”default” data_top_style=”default” data_padding_right=”5″ data_padding_left=”5″ data_width=”fullwidth”][cmsmasters_column data_width=”1/1″ data_border_style=”default”][cmsmasters_text]\nPhoto: DenisaPhoto \nby Irene Kelleher\nPresented by Mighty Oak Productions\n\nOctober 1st to 12th (excluding Sunday 6th) @ 8pm   \n“Every small town has its secrets.”\nIreland – 1990. Nelson Mandela was freed; the first female Irish president was inaugurated and the worst song of all time was composed entitled ‘Give it a lash Jack’. But these events are irrelevant to Oisín and Gráinne\, two social misfits\, as they attempt to survive life approaching Leaving Cert. \nBecause there is something at the heart of Kilthomas… you can breathe it in the air. \nAn old legend. A dark history set to repeat itself. It is not because of the briars\, jagged rocks and dark terrain that no one walks down to the faery ring. People have disappeared without a trace. \nSomething memorable happens in this quiet town. It is the night of their final year celebrations and the students’ transition into the next phase of their lives. As the students of Kilthomas Community School sweat out their frustrations to the sounds of MC Hammer and INXS\, the party intensifies. \nSomeone goes missing. \nAnd only a diary is found. \nMIGHTY OAK PRODUCTIONS\nThe Misfit Mythology is the second play\, alongside Gone Full Havisham to be produced by Mighty Oak Productions. A company founded in January 2019 focusing on the production of new work in Ireland. \nThe Misfit Mythology is the second play by writer Irene Kelleher whose first play\, Mary and Me\, received much critical acclaim at the Brighton and Edinburgh Fringe and enjoyed a Nationwide Irish tour and was nominated for a Bobby Award. The play is published by Oberon. \n“Kelleher is an exceptionally talented writer.” – BROADWAY BABY ★★★★★\n“Written with huge delicacy and skill… Kelleher marks herself out as a writer to watch.” – THE STAGE ★★★★\n“Both in writing and performance\, Kelleher is light years ahead of much of the posse.” – THE ARTS REVIEW ★★★★\n \nTHE MISFIT MYTHOLOGY\nThe play is directed by Killian Collins and it is Killian and Irene’s second time collaborating on a project. The first being The Turn of the Screw which enjoyed a very successful run at Smock Alley Theatre and The Everyman. \nTwo actors play the two protagonists\, Gráinne and Oisín\, amongst a host of other characters. The Misfit Mythology is a story that is very Irish\, set 28 years ago at a time when Ireland was struggling to transition and to keep up. Small town Ireland where the Saw Doctor’s ‘I used to love her’ trumps ‘New Kids on the Block’. \nThe play will bring you on a sometimes hilarious\, sometimes unsettling\, nostalgic journey through small town Ireland in the 1990s\, where every town has its secrets. \n  \nThis production is made possible by the Cork Arts Theatre and the Arts Council Emerging Artists Programme. \n“I applied for the Cork Arts Theatre Emerging Artists Programme as it is a fantastic opportunity to stage new work. It is an honour to be able to premiere ‘The Misfit Mythology’ in my hometown under my own production company. The intimate nature of the theatre is ideal for this play as the two main characters are in direct dialogue with the audience. Both myself and Killian Collins have been involved in many productions in the Cork Arts Theatre in the past ten years and\, with the rejuvenation of the theatre\, I am excited to be a part of the theatre’s future. I hope that premiering ‘The Misfit Mythology’ in the Cork Arts Theatre will make the audience want to see more future projects from Mighty Oak Productions.”\n– IRENE KELLEHER \n \nTickets:\nPreview Tuesday 1st October: All tickets are €10\nAll other performance dates: €15\, €12 conc. \nAdministration fee on phone and online bookings. \nNote for Online Bookings: Once your booking is complete\, please either print your tickets at home and bring them with you\, or present them on your phone at the box office on arrival and they will print them for you. \n[/cmsmasters_text][cmsmasters_button shortcode_id=”a61ya833j” button_link=”https://www.ticketsource.eu/corkartstheatre/events” button_target=”blank” button_text_align=”left” button_style=”cmsmasters_but_bg_hover” button_font_weight=”bold” button_font_style=”default” button_text_transform=”none” button_border_style=”default” button_bg_color=”#b58e4f” button_text_color=”#ffffff” button_bg_color_h=”#000000″ button_text_color_h=”#ffffff” animation_delay=”0″]BOOK NOW[/cmsmasters_button][/cmsmasters_column][/cmsmasters_row]

Then called the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Festival\, an event dedicated to the celebration of the short story and named for one of Cork’s most beloved authors\, the event has grown to become one of the most prestigious short story festivals. The festival showcases readings\, literary forums and workshops. \nIn 2003\, the Munster Literature Centre introduced the Seán O’Faoláin International Short Story Prize\, an annual international short story competition dedicated to one of Ireland’s most accomplished story writers and theorists. This year’s winning story will be presented during the festival on Saturday 28th. \nThe festival also presents a number of other awards including The Frank O’Connor International Short Story Fellowship. This fellowship is made possible through the very generous sponsorship of Cork City Council (the municipal government). The fellowship follows on from the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award and further demonstrates the commitment of the Munster Literature Centre and Cork City Council to the international short story community. Named for one of Cork’s most renowned writers it acknowledges the special place the short story form occupies in the cultural history and contemporary practice of the city. This year the fellow is Sara Maitland\, who will be reading on Wednesday 25th and leading a writing workshop as part of the festival. \nOther awards include The Frank O’Connor International Short Story Mentorship Bursaries and The Southword Fiction Chapbook Competition. \nThe full list of readings\, forums and workshops can be viewed on the festival website: http://www.corkshortstory.net/friday.html \nYou can also make online bookings for ticketed events on the website. \nHeader image credit: The Book Writing Machine from Paradisi Regained by Daphne Rocou \n[/cmsmasters_text][cmsmasters_button shortcode_id=”a61ya833j” button_link=”https://www.ticketsource.eu/corkartstheatre/events” button_target=”blank” button_text_align=”left” button_style=”cmsmasters_but_bg_hover” button_font_weight=”bold” button_font_style=”default” button_text_transform=”none” button_border_style=”default” button_bg_color=”#b58e4f” button_text_color=”#ffffff” button_bg_color_h=”#000000″ button_text_color_h=”#ffffff” animation_delay=”0″]BOOK NOW[/cmsmasters_button][/cmsmasters_column][/cmsmasters_row]

Dealing with a strained home life\, a new town and an incident at school\, our unnamed protagonist ends up being sent to a child psychologist… who is\, in their words – an idiot. \nAt turns harrowing\, hilarious and moving\, AC/DC is a rare piece of theatre that approaches themes of mental health with warmth and hope. \nPerformed by Amber Deasy\nDirected by Katrina Foley \nWandering Star are the team who brought you Fleabag by Phoebe Waller-Bridge\, bedbound by Enda Walsh and Lex Talionis (A Tale of Vengeance & Feathers) by Liam Heylin. \nTICKETS: \nLUNCH: €12.50 (includes light lunch and show). Inexplicably\, he still has the gift of speech and a few of his other senses as well. As he tries to come to terms with his predicament\, his friends make fitful efforts to carry out his last wish – to scatter his ashes on the grave of Little Nellie of Holy God in the local convent. \nThis play is an unapologetic look at the lives of people that struggled to be who they were in a City that didn’t accept them. It shows the grittier side of Cork and all its residents. The nostalgic feeling only compliments the outrageousness of the plot. The play touches on topics of grief\, death\, Aids\, LGBT struggles and faith\, but not one overshadows the other. They all come together to create a truly unique experience that has previously left audiences in laughing fits and hysterics. \nHaving fallen in love with the show\, the three performers Niall Holland\, Shane Corcoran and Alex Herlihy set up The Gaze Productions with the sole purpose of presenting this play to a wider audience. \nTICKETS: \nLUNCH: €12.50 (includes light lunch and show). Each day she deploys a deadly combo of brutal and delicate cunning to get what she needs and what she really needs is to ‘top up’ from the night before and the night before that. She bounds from hungover to absolutely hammered again and again with the true determination and dedication that can only be admired. \nBTW\, Effie is going to save us all. \nOur sacrificial deer who just couldn’t give a fuck. \nIphigenia in Splott tells the story of a young woman who has no use for hopes or dreams… unless they belong to us. \nConflicted Theatre use Gary Owen’s lauded script to transpose their bold storytelling into an honest-to-goodness theatre for the first time in quite a while. \nThis powerful one-woman show screams of decaying urban atmospheres and provides Conflicted with the perfect launchpad for a show that will be loud and brash and violent and tender. \nhttps://corkartstheatre.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/new-iph-01.mp4\nCONFLICTED THEATRE\nConflicted Theatre have been devising\, adapting\, writing and stealing work since 2010. The core of the company is Gavin McEntee & Evan Lordan\, but we work with an unofficial ensemble of collaborators time and time again\, who helped us to create a kaleidoscopic and eclectic body of work. \nHave a look – www.conflictedtheatre.com \nIt’s tough to nail down exactly what we do\, because we are yet to try the same thing twice. We wrote After Jekyll (2010); used a former government building to construct an immersive promenade story with 18-35 (2012); adapted The Scarlet Letter (2013) and performed it at City Hall; We Make Gods (2014) was an entirely devised modern myth; we created a private dining experience\, stealing another writer’s words with Come Dine with Charles Mee (2015); and in Neon Western (2017)\, we sneaked our audience into an epic cinematic warehouse rave. \nDo try and keep up – www.facebook.com/conflictedtheatre/ \nWith Iphigenia in Splott we are challenging ourselves with something entirely different; we’re going to tackle a beautifully constructed script. Don’t presume that this means we have settled down into a life of cozy traditional theatre… anything but. \nThis production is made possible by the Cork Arts Theatre and the Arts Council Emerging Artists Programme. \n“Conflicted have been around the block (literally)\, making work throughout Cork City over the past 9 years and when we decided that our next new challenge was to produce an electric\, one-woman show we couldn’t imagine a more behoving first-time partner for us than the Cork Arts Theatre\, a true theatre institution here in Cork. ” – CONFLICTED THEATRE \n \nTickets: €15\, €12 conc. \nAdministration fee on phone and online bookings. \nNote for Online Bookings: Once your booking is complete\, please either print your tickets at home and bring them with you\, or present them on your phone at the box office on arrival and they will print them for you. \n[/cmsmasters_text][cmsmasters_button shortcode_id=”a61ya833j” button_link=”https://www.corkmidsummer.com/programme/event/iphigenia-in-splott” button_target=”blank” button_text_align=”left” button_style=”cmsmasters_but_bg_hover” button_font_weight=”bold” button_font_style=”default” button_text_transform=”none” button_border_style=”default” button_bg_color=”#b58e4f” button_text_color=”#ffffff” button_bg_color_h=”#000000″ button_text_color_h=”#ffffff” animation_delay=”0″]BOOK NOW[/cmsmasters_button][/cmsmasters_column][/cmsmasters_row]

The Rookie has problems of his own; massively in debt to a terrifying gangland figure for killing his prized Siamese fighting fish\, he steels himself for a hideous revenge\, until he is championed from an unlikely quarter by his onetime enemy. Howie The Rookie is a white-knuckle ride through a nightmare Dublin\, where enemies and allies are interchangeable\, where most brutal events take on mystic significance. This is a play that is not to be missed. \n“Fintan Kelly tames\, controls and masters the stage as his own. In the hands of a lesser director\, Mark O’Rowe’s writing skills would be nought.” – Wexford People \n“Mark O’Rowe’s extraordinary play drives you to the depths of humanity’s horror\, then stops your stomach churning by demanding that you laugh” – The Irish Times \n“It is\, quite simply\, Greek in its power of catharsis while piling laughter. Euripides would be proud to call Mark O’Rowe a brother in art” – Irish Independent \nTickets: €15\nAdministration fee on phone and online bookings. \nNote for Online Bookings: Once your booking is complete\, please either print your tickets at home and bring them with you\, or present them on your phone at the box office on arrival and they will print them for you. \n[/cmsmasters_text][cmsmasters_button shortcode_id=”a61ya833j” button_link=”https://www.ticketsource.eu/corkartstheatre/events” button_target=”blank” button_text_align=”left” button_style=”cmsmasters_but_bg_hover” button_font_weight=”bold” button_font_style=”default” button_text_transform=”none” button_border_style=”default” button_bg_color=”#b58e4f” button_text_color=”#ffffff” button_bg_color_h=”#000000″ button_text_color_h=”#ffffff” animation_delay=”0″]BOOK NOW[/cmsmasters_button][/cmsmasters_column][/cmsmasters_row]

The guidelines of the project clearly state\, she is not allowed to present on any household names like Countess Markievicz\, Mary Robinson or Katie Taylor… no famous personalities or Irish legends. This leads her to think\, ‘There’s no one left’. \nHowever\, her reluctant research shows her women from Ireland who have influenced the world in ways she never even dreamed. Her vibrant imagination brings these women to life and allows her to talk with them. She discovers doctors\, scientists\, professors and world famous singers. With the help of these women Fianna begins to see things in a completely different way and learns that\, no matter what\, she can achieve anything. \nA.TACK THEATRE\nA.Tack Theatre was founded in March 2015 by Aoife Byrne and Alison McCarthy. A.Tack Theatre strives to create socially-aware theatre inspired by their lives and the lives of those around them. So far they have produced three original pieces: Jacqueline – a play about a couch-surfing student\, which won the Galway Fringe First Award 2018; Lockedwithin – which focuses on mental health issues; and Puck and the Lovers: A Dementia Inclusive Play – a piece designed entirely for people with dementia or similar. \nHerStory was inspired by the lack of Irish women featured in ‘Bedtime Stories for Rebel Girls’ and Aoife’s subsequent research into what Irish women had to offer in history. The play follows more obscure characters than the obvious – women that have achieved great things both at home and abroad but you wouldn’t usually find in your history books. This is A.Tack’s first venture into theatre for YA audiences. \nThis production is made possible by the Cork Arts Theatre and the Arts Council Emerging Artists Programme. \n“We are delighted to be part of the Emerging Artists Programme. The Cork Arts Theatre have provided a fantastic opportunity for ourselves and the others involved in the project to grow and develop our work and skills. We are delighted to be able to expand this new piece with their great support.” – A.TACK THEATRE \n \nTickets: €15\, €12 conc. \nAdministration fee on phone and online bookings. \nNote for Online Bookings: Once your booking is complete\, please either print your tickets at home and bring them with you\, or present them on your phone at the box office on arrival and they will print them for you. \n[/cmsmasters_text][cmsmasters_button shortcode_id=”a61ya833j” button_link=”https://www.ticketsource.eu/corkartstheatre/events” button_target=”blank” button_text_align=”left” button_style=”cmsmasters_but_bg_hover” button_font_weight=”bold” button_font_style=”default” button_text_transform=”none” button_border_style=”default” button_bg_color=”#b58e4f” button_text_color=”#ffffff” button_bg_color_h=”#000000″ button_text_color_h=”#ffffff” animation_delay=”0″]BOOK NOW[/cmsmasters_button][/cmsmasters_column][/cmsmasters_row]

Meanwhile\, Mistress Page’s daughter\, Anne\, is the object of affection of several would be suitors\, who all wish her hand\, in spite of the fact that she is in love with a young courtier\, Fenton\, who seems to have the disapproval of all around him. \nIt will all lead to a fairy-lit crescendo as Falstaff learns a very valuable lesson – don’t mess with the Merry Wives of Windsor! \nDirected by Raymond Brothers \nTickets: €15\, €12 conc. \nAdministration fee on phone and online bookings. \nNote for Online Bookings: Once your booking is complete\, please either print your tickets at home and bring them with you\, or present them on your phone at the box office on arrival and they will print them for you. \n[/cmsmasters_text][cmsmasters_button shortcode_id=”a61ya833j” button_link=”https://www.ticketsource.eu/corkartstheatre/events” button_target=”blank” button_text_align=”left” button_style=”cmsmasters_but_bg_hover” button_font_weight=”bold” button_font_style=”default” button_text_transform=”none” button_border_style=”default” button_bg_color=”#b58e4f” button_text_color=”#ffffff” button_bg_color_h=”#000000″ button_text_color_h=”#ffffff” animation_delay=”0″]BOOK NOW[/cmsmasters_button][/cmsmasters_column][/cmsmasters_row]

Lawrence\nPresented by Kinsale College Drama\nRed Handed is Wilbert W Lawrence’s savage indictment of ‘Normality’ and ‘things that are beige’. \nHis fourth\, and many think\, his best play\, Red Handed stretches and breaks theatrical conventions as if they are social conventions\, in an attempt to undermine the foundation blocks of corrupt western consciousness: ‘Normality is a state of being which is responsible for all that is wrong with society and the world.’ Or as he said to the press at the premiere of Red Handed at the Royal Court Theatre\, ‘Normal people scare me.’ Based on his own early experiences as a Neo-Situationist on the wrong side of London’s police\, and a lifelong obsession with his muse\, the political activist and granddaughter of Andre Gide\, Stella Gide\, Red Handed careers across modern London like an out of control tram. \nWilbert W Lawrence was born in Aberdeen in 1988. Originally an actor and poet\, he published a volume of poetry: Singing in Darkness\, in 2010 before going on to write four critically acclaimed and award winning plays: Cut the Telephone Wires\, won the Evening Standard’s Best New Play Award in 2013\, and a Tony award for theatre writing with the most innovative investigative practice. Pelted in the Street by my Own Family\, was turned into the award winning film Just Go\, in 2016. Red Handed has won three festival comedy awards\, in Edinburgh\, Brighton\, and Dublin. \nWilbert W Lawrence is seen by many as the most divisive figure in modern theatre. A provocative exponent of ‘bad-taste theatre’\, his work seeks to ‘swim against the tide of orthodoxy-sniffing doom merchants and their issue-based monotony.’  In the acceptance speech of his Tony Award\, Lawrence infamously denounced Martin McDonagh’s plays as ‘a poisonous\, politically-correct pastiche of JB Keane\,’ thereby igniting a long running feud. His denunciation of the Royal Court’s artistic policy\, led to a Court Case\, in which he was forced to retract the assertion that ‘fascism comes in all sorts of disguises. In The Royal Court it comes in the shape of trying to brainwash us that theatre can only be made by or in support of minority groups.’ His law suits with press and peers led him to try to unsuccessfully eradicate all mention of himself and his work from social media sites. \nCriticised by critics for writing a self-referential play in Red Handed\, it has been noted by those sympathetic to his work\, that in keeping with much of his published verse\, the self-portrait is not flattering. \nTickets: €10\nAdministration fee on phone and online bookings. \nNote for Online Bookings: Once your booking is complete\, please either print your tickets at home and bring them with you\, or present them on your phone at the box office on arrival and they will print them for you. \n[/cmsmasters_text][cmsmasters_button shortcode_id=”a61ya833j” button_link=”https://www.ticketsource.eu/corkartstheatre/events” button_target=”blank” button_text_align=”left” button_style=”cmsmasters_but_bg_hover” button_font_weight=”bold” button_font_style=”default” button_text_transform=”none” button_border_style=”default” button_bg_color=”#b58e4f” button_text_color=”#ffffff” button_bg_color_h=”#000000″ button_text_color_h=”#ffffff” animation_delay=”0″]BOOK NOW[/cmsmasters_button][/cmsmasters_column][/cmsmasters_row]
