Booking is very brisk so we recommend you book early to avoid missing this very entertaining event. \nThe event has proved immensely popular with audiences and performers alike over the years and\, once again\, we will have ten mini-plays each evening with something to suit all tastes. Audiences will also get to vote for their favourite play of the evening which adds to the sense of occasion. \nWe are delighted to be able to say that this event has grown from its humble beginnings to become one of the most popular shows in our annual programme. There was huge interest again this year from writers both nationally and internationally with over 100 plays submitted. Our panel of readers are currently hard at work poring over all the entries and will eventually whittle these down to the final 10 plays to be staged. As in previous years\, we are sure that the final ten plays will prove to be wonderful examples of what can be achieved on stage in a short space of time with a well-crafted script. \nThe event continues to be an important fund-raiser for the Cork Arts Theatre and it wouldn’t be possible without everyone giving of their time so generously. As usual\, things get out of hand pretty quickly with deadly (and hilarious) consequences. \nThe audience must play their part each night too and they will secretly decide beforehand who the unfortunate victim and the mysterious murderer will be. And they will also provide hilarious ‘secrets’ that the cast read out at random moments to add mayhem and mirth to the proceedings. All of this is completed before the show starts so that the audience can then sit back\, relax and enjoy the ensuing mayhem. \nBringing the various characters to life each evening is the task for the very talented Cork cast members. Their experience in comedy improvisation will ensure that the audience won’t have time to catch their breath. \nThe production is devised by Cabal Theatre Company director\, James Horgan\, who says of the show\, “Due to both its improvised nature and the audience ‘secrets’ the show is completely different each time it’s performed. ‘The gang’ are attending another of their infamous Halloween parties but\, tragically\, it will be the last party for one of them! Who will the victim be? And who is the dastardly murderer? The first prize is €2000. The winner also receives a week’s residency at the Anam Cara artist retreat in West Cork\, a featured reading at the Cork International Short Story Festival (with four-night hotel stay and full board) and publication of their winning story in Southword. This occasion is an opportunity to hear the 2022 winning story “Infestato” by E.M. Hughes. \nE.M. Hughes is a writer and editor making a living offering communications advice in the public and voluntary sector. Having previously worked in grocery stores\, pubs\, hotels\, bookstores\, call centres and banks in five different countries\, he is happy to earn his keep writing under other people’s names – but happiest when writing under his own. His articles have appeared in the Berkeley Political Review\, The Daily Californian\, and the Newsletter of the European Union and the Montesquieu Instituut. Hughes resides in Utrecht with his wife and newborn and is completing a collection of stories about working life. \nThe AKO Caine Prize for African Writing is a literature prize awarded to an African writer of a short story published in English. The Prize was launched in 2000 to encourage and highlight the richness and diversity of African writing by bringing it to a wider audience internationally. The focus on the short story reflects the contemporary development of the African storytelling tradition. \nIdza Luhumyo was born in Mombasa\, Kenya\, and holds a law degree from University of Nairobi. She is the inaugural winner of the Margaret Busby New Daughters of Africa Award (2020) and winner of the Short Story Day Africa Prize (2021). Set in the 1940s\, this is a dark comedy that centres around the members of the Brewster family and their homicidal tendencies. He’d probably rather be anywhere else\, but he’s here now and he does look great in running shorts\, so he might as well just go for it. \nThis\, That & The Other is a play about marathons\, but it’s also a play about the hectic pace of modern life. She is responsible for many of the innovations at Cork Arts Theatre: Cork Rep\, the Emerging Artists programme\, the Lunch/Supper seasons and the Creative Empowerment Programme. Dolores has directed over 120 plays including Over the Pub\, The Cage\, We Were There\, and The Good Doctor. After his initial shock at George’s disappearance\, he starts to think like his hero Holmes in a frantic effort to save his friend before it’s too late. \nTimmy O’Mahony is a playwright and theatre maker based in Cork city. He has been a resident in Corcadorca TDC and as an Artist at Work with Dublin Fringe Festival. Karan has been striking out lately to explore new areas of performance on the piano and with spoken word and theatre\, and is delighted to be collaborating with acclaimed director\, Sophie Motley\, on The Women\, We Will Rise. \nThis new project progresses the female narrative in the folk tradition\, placing women centre stage and sharing through song the experiences of gallant women from Ireland’s past\, whilst singing into being a vision for the women of the future.
