SUMMARY:JUMP!?
DESCRIPTION: BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND\nTuesday 30th January – Saturday 3rd February 2024 @ 8.00pm\n\nJUMP!?\nWritten and performed by Pauline O’Driscoll\nDirected by Karen Minihan\n\nA Middle-Aged\, Coming-Of-Age play.\nHilarious\, Hor-mental\, Taboo Busting Comedy \nRecommended age 16+. Adult Themes & Sexual References. \nMonica is on the edge\, literally! She’s had enough\, of being nice and reasonable and sensible\, not to mention her temperamental fffing washing machine. She wants to scream and shout. She wants more… including but not limited to the perfect cocktail … of hormones! \nA bold\, truthful and delightfully comic leapfrog through all the taboo minefields of female hormones and sexuality from menstruation to menopause and everything in between. \n“Something has to change … to jump or not to jump that is the question!” \n“Am I mad or what? …… No! I’m just hor-mental!” \nConsummate actor Pauline O’Driscoll is best known on screen for Mustard\, Sisters\, Smalltown\, The Young Offenders and on stage for solo plays Seven Ages of MAM which she co-wrote and You Have It All Backwards. Jump!? is Pauline’s first solo self-penned play. \nWriter and artistic director of Playacting Theatre\, Karen Minihan has an extensive back catalogue of projects ranging from small\, intimate\, innovative productions to large\, all-inclusive\, community spectacles. She is also author of the book & subsequent show Extraordinary Ordinary Women\, which she and Pauline continue to tour to the many corners of West Cork and beyond. \nWhat audiences are saying about JUMP!? \n\n“An extraordinary piece and an extraordinary performance of it. An acting masterclass.”\n“I brought my wife. We both loved it. Men\, bring the women in your lives\, they’ll love you for it. Women\, bring the men in your lives they’ll laugh and maybe learn a thing or two at the same time!” \n“Absolutely incredible! Full of energy\, antics and stories of life and love and hormones.”\n“Side-splittingly funny. Passionate\, courageous and athletic! I can’t recommend JUMP!? enough.”\n“Absolutely fantastic! Brutally honest\, hilarious\, cringy\, sad and bursting with truths we all know!”\n“I’m still laughing!! Absolutely brilliant. I loved the acting\, the set\, the story. My mother and I were both in tears of laughter. Thank you. I have a list of friends who need to see this show.”\n“ ***** No excuses! A brilliant piece of work .. a gift that kept on giving.” \n“So good and so funny .. and it taught our husbands so much we don’t need to say anymore now!”\n“Wow\, just wow. So funny and so physical. I loved it. I didn’t laugh like that for a long time”\n“What a play! A serious subject addressed with humanity and humour.”\n“Amazing.. absolutely terrific .. a really wonderful experience. Go if you can\, you won’t regret it.”\n“Funny\, thought provoking and informative and so funny… did we mention funny!! When need to book our husbands in.”\n“Pauline O’Driscoll is a legend! Fantastic show.”\n“Such an enjoyable and fantastic show\, laughed so much!”\n“My wife and I loved it\, we laughed\, we cringed. It made us want to see more theatre.”\n“I laughed so much my tummy hurt. It was fab .. Pauline was amazing. JUMP!? is brilliant.”\n“Absolutely brilliant. Very funny and worthy of the standing ovation”\n“A tonic! A great night’s entertainment!”  \n\nWhat the critics say about Seven Ages of MAM: \n“MUST SEE SHOW… wondrously inventive … hilariously detailed … O’Driscoll can call down the angels in a light high tessitura – a whisper away from silence\, and she can … roar like a banshee. …….. master of pause and sudden tangent\, the surprise monologue\, the squirm of embarrassment\, the language of love and forgiveness and letting go. What O’Driscoll brings even more than humour is sudden abiding grief. And what she gets more than grief is life-affirming humour\, and what she gets most is utter exhaustion … No\, she’s of a piece. This is consummately acted\, wholly believable\, the most original riff on the Seven Ages I’ve seen … in short\, SEE IT” – Simon Jenner\, FringeReview \n“The audience hung on every word and went willingly on a roller coaster ride of emotions masterfully orchestrated by Pauline O’Driscoll … a terrific show\, funny\, heart-rending and jam-packed full of relevance and social commentary … a powerful\, beautifully nuanced\, mesmerizing performance”  – Denis Walsh\, Listowel Advertiser \nDirected by Karen Minihan \nSet Design by Hannah Bethan Lane \nProjection + Sound Design by Cormac O’Connor \nLighting Design by Jamie Feehily \n  \nTickets:  €15\n*Booking fees apply.\nDiscounts available for students and groups of 6+. SUMMARY:The Wisdom of Eve
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 1st – Saturday 4th November @ 8pm\nMatinee Saturday 4th @ 2.00pm\n\nThe Wisdom of Eve\nby Mary Orr\n\n“Fasten your seatbelts\, it’s going to be a bumpy night” \nThe UCC Players are delighted to be back on stage at the Cork Arts Theatre with their new production of “The Wisdom of Eve” by Mary Orr.\nShy\, sincere and conscientious\, Eve Harrington’s dream is realised when she is taken on as a personal secretary by her actress idol\, Margo Crane. However\, Eve’s seemingly innocent and devoted demeanour masks her true intentions– to usurp Margo’s position in the theatre world and become the new reigning star. The story unfolds through a series of betrayals\, deceptions\, and manipulations highlighting the cutthroat nature of the entertainment industry and the complexities of human relationships. \nAdapted from the short story by the author\, the story provided the basis for the Academy Award winning classic film All About Eve (starring Bette Davis and Anne Baxter) and the hit musical Applause. \nThis stage version is an engrossing and revealing inside story of life in the world of 1950’s New York theatre\, featuring an array of unforgettable characters and razor-sharp dialogue. \nDirector: Brenda Lynch \nCast (in order of appearance): \nKaren Roberts: Adriana Dinneen\nEve Harrington: Karen Ray\nMargo Crane: Jean van Sinderen-Law\nClement Howell: Jim O’Mahony\nLloyd Roberts: Mike O’Keeffe\nLeila: Ruben Keane\nTally-ho Thompson: Patricia O’Regan\nBert Hinkle: Mark Rowlands\nVera Thompson: Rosie O’Byrne \nRuntime: 2hrs 20mins approx. SUMMARY:The Comedy Improvised Murder Mystery
DESCRIPTION: Thursday 26th to Saturday 28th October @ 8.00pm\n\nThe Comedy Improvised Murder Mystery\n\nStarring Laura O’Mahony\, John McCarthy\, Laura Harte\, Annette Roche and Adrian Scanlan\nDevised by James Horgan\n \nThe Comedy Improvised Murder Mystery Gang are back again with their hilarious ‘off the cuff’ antics at the Cork Arts Theatre from Thursday 26th October. \nThe show is entirely improvised and with no script to fall back on the actors must create the entire plot with its many twists and turns on the spot. As usual\, things get out of hand pretty quickly with deadly (and hilarious) consequences. \nThe audience play their part each night too as they will secretly decide beforehand who the unfortunate victim and the mysterious murderer will be. And they will also provide hilarious ‘secrets’ that the cast read out at random moments to add mayhem and mirth to the proceedings. All of this is completed before the show starts so that the audience can then sit back\, relax and enjoy the ensuing mayhem. \nBringing the various characters to life each evening is the task for the very talented Cork cast members. Their experience in comedy improvisation will ensure that the audience won’t have time to catch their breath. \nThe production is devised by Cabal Theatre Company director\, James Horgan\, who says of the show\, “Due to both its improvised nature and the audience ‘secrets’ the show is completely different each time it’s performed. ‘The gang’ are attending another of their infamous Halloween parties but\, tragically\, it will be the last party for one of them! Who will the victim be? And who is the dastardly murderer? No-one knows\, especially not the cast!” \nSo\, with audience suggestions\, random musical cues and no script in sight\, ‘The Comedy Improvised Murder Mystery’ is\, once again\, set to be a deliciously chaotic and hilarious evening’s entertainment. \nTickets sell out very quickly for this show so we advise booking as early as possible. \nAnd please note\, that the show is only suitable for persons aged 16 and over. \nTickets: €18\, Groups of 8 or more €14 per person \nAdministration fee on phone and online bookings.

SUMMARY:JUMP!?
DESCRIPTION: Tuesday 17th – Saturday 21st October @ 8.00pm\n\nJUMP!?\nWritten and performed by Pauline O’Driscoll\nDirected by Karen Minihan\n\nA Middle-Aged\, Coming-Of-Age play.\nRaunchy\, Hormonal Comedy \nRecommended age 16+. Adult Themes & Sexual References. \nMonica is on the edge\, literally! She’s had enough\, of being nice and reasonable and sensible\, not to mention her temperamental fffing washing machine. She wants to scream and shout. She wants more! \nA searingly truthful\, but delightfully comic leapfrog through the taboo minefields of puberty\, menstruation\, fertility\, infertility\, the pressure on women to reproduce\, the choice not to\, fertility treatments\, middle aged sex\, vaginal atrophy and the hunt for the perfect cocktail… of hormones. \n“Something has to change… to jump or not to jump that is the question!”\n“Am I mad?… No! I’m hor-mental!” \nConsummate actor Pauline O’Driscoll is best known on screen for Mustard\, Sisters\, Smalltown\, The Young Offenders and on stage for solo plays Seven Ages of MAM which she co-wrote and You Have It All Backwards both of which had sell out runs at Cork Arts Theatre. Jump!? is Pauline’s first solo self-penned play. \nWhat the critics say about Seven Ages of MAM: \n“MUST SEE SHOW… wondrously inventive … hilariously detailed … O’Driscoll can call down the angels in a light high tessitura – a whisper away from silence\, and she can … roar like a banshee. …….. master of pause and sudden tangent\, the surprise monologue\, the squirm of embarrassment\, the language of love and forgiveness and letting go. What O’Driscoll brings even more than humour is sudden abiding grief. And what she gets more than grief is life-affirming humour\, and what she gets most is utter exhaustion … No\, she’s of a piece. This is consummately acted\, wholly believable\, the most original riff on the Seven Ages I’ve seen … in short\, SEE IT” – Simon Jenner\, FringeReview \n“The audience hung on every word and went willingly on a roller coaster ride of emotions masterfully orchestrated by Pauline O’Driscoll … a terrific show\, funny\, heart-rending and jam-packed full of relevance and social commentary … a powerful\, beautifully nuanced\, mesmerizing performance”  – Denis Walsh\, Listowel Advertiser \nTickets: Preview €10\, Standard €15\n*Booking fees apply.\nDiscounts available for students and groups of 6+. Please contact Box Office. \n \nThis production is part of the Creative Empowerment Award supported by Cork Arts Theatre and The Community Foundation Ireland.

SUMMARY:Off the Meter\, On the Record
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 10th October @ 8pm\n\nOff The Meter\, On The Record\nA play by John McDonagh\nA comedic glimpse into 35 years behind the wheel of a New York City yellow taxi\, Off The Meter is a pithy social commentary from New York’s most recognizable cab driver about life spent behind the wheel. John McDonagh\, veteran radio host\, has condensed thirty-plus years of activism\, reality show antics and observation into a love song to the city that never sleeps. \nFrom the plight of the NYC homeless to the crazy demands of Upper East Side matrons\, McDonagh brings the audience from laughter to tears and back again faster than the apparition of umbrella dealers on a rainy day. Throw in his tales of brushes with the rich and famous\, and you have Irish storytelling at its best. \nResiding in Queens\, New York City\, John’s parents were from Donegal and Tyrone\, and he spent his childhood going back and forth between Queens and his uncle’s sheep farm outside of Pettigo\, Donegal. He began his career as a cab driver after serving in the US army in Germany during the Vietnam war. \nOff the Meter represents the culmination of a forty year career of driving a yellow cab in New York City\, while trying to make a difference in the world. A glimpse into the changing landscape of the city from the unique position of behind the wheel of an NYC yellow cab\, and takes the audience from tears to hilarity in the speed of a New York minute. Initially presented during the NYC Fringe Festival\, it had a successful sold out run at the Irish Repertory Theatre in New York City\, and was directed by Irish Rep founder Ciaran O’Reilly. Shown in theaters in Boston and New York\, it also received the First Origin Irish Theatre Spirit Award in January of 2022 and was shown in the Sean O’Casey Theatre in Dublin before capacity crowds as part of the O’Casey Festival\, where it was very well received.\nWhen not performing the play\, John co-hosts a weekly radio show with Malachy McCourt on WBAI\, 99.5 FM in NYC every Sunday. He is a board member of the Irish American Writers and Artists\, and has featured on the BBC program Steven Fry in America\, Top Gear with Richard Hammond\, and The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. \nA Q&A will take place after the show with guest Conal Creedon.\n\nStephen Fry – ” My Fellow Cabbie- The best and most articulate guide I have ever had”\nRichard Hammond – ” John McDonagh is faster than a New York Minute” \nNew York Times –  “The Bard of Gridlock” \nNew York Daily News – ” John takes Passengers and theatre goers on one hell of a ride” \nIrish Echo – ” Rip- Roaring -Side Spitting -Tongue in check one man play” \nNew York Irish Arts – ” “Off The Meter” offers a topsy-turvy journey through the New York streets” \nWoman Around Town – “Had Mark Twain driven a yellow cab instead of a riverboat\, his stories might’ve been like those of populist raconteur John McDonagh” \nThe New Yorker – “he’s an unfailingly affable raconteur… It’s all fascinating stuff” \nThe Epoch Times -“An absorbing portrait of a city and society in continual flux\, as told by someone who has lived through it\, Off the Meter\, on the Record makes for an extremely satisfying journey.” \nTheaterScene – “uproarious and moving” \nTheatre’s Leiter Side – “Hilarious…It’s hard to think of anyone who could who could do justice to the New York cabby’s life better than John McDonagh.” \nCurtain Up – ” it’s a gem” \nTickets: €15\, Concessions €12\n*Booking fees apply. \n \n

SUMMARY:Cortisol
DESCRIPTION:Thursday 31st August @ 8pm\nFriday 1st September @ 1pm\nCORTISOL\nby Megan Haly & Shannon Haly\nREHEARSED READING \nCortisol tells the story of Sam who through love\, grief and self discovery is learning to navigate life in her twenties- with a metamorphic timeline\, the play drifts between childhood nostalgia and present day chaos.\nThis is a new piece of writing by Cork sisters Megan and Shannon Haly. Collaborating across different time zones\, the Halys began writing Cortisol during the Covid Pandemic. With only 18 months between them\, the sisters wanted to address commonly held misconceptions about people in their twenties. The idea of ‘your twenties being the best years of your life’ was something they struggled with and felt it was an important reality that needed discussion. Nostalgia is a fundamental theme to this play. It looks at how our childhood and growing up in Ireland has influenced the kind of people we are today. From being honest about our sexuality\, living up to our parents’ expectations of us\, leaving our hometowns and the evolution of friendships as we get older\, this play is an exploration of love\, self discovery\, and the journey of becoming ourselves. \nFresh off the stage from a rehearsed reading of their play at the Irish Repertory Theatre in New York\, the sisters are excited to share a new draft of Cortisol with Cork audiences at The Cork Arts Theatre. \n“Cortisol is like a puzzle piece you are putting together in your brain as you’re watching.” – Jenny Green\, New York Irish Arts. \nWritten and Performed by Megan Haly & Shannon Haly\nDirected by Bailey Bass\nProduced by Sadhbh Barrett Coakley\nStage Managed by Molly Foley\nLighting by Jamie Feehily \nCortisol is one of 4 new works in the CATALYST programme that runs throughout September at Cork Arts Theatre. \nCATALYST is a new collaboration between Cork Arts Theatre and The Everyman\, supported by Cork City Council Arts Office\, which aims to provide a platform for the work of early career theatre artists in the city. \nTickets: €8\n*Booking fees apply. \n \n

Having sold out during its previous run at the Cork Arts Theatre\, the play\, written and directed by Marion Wyatt\, creator of Before Dawn\, Dockers\, Shawlies\, On Albert Road and The Sunbeam Girls promises an equally entertaining show all about “a bold and beautiful Cork woman.” The play\, written with the support of Miss Barry’s family\, chronicles the colourful life of one of the great Coal Quay characters. SUMMARY:Work is the Curse of the Drinking Classes
DESCRIPTION:Weds. 5th – Sat. 8th July 2023 @ 8.00pm\nplus Lunchtime Performances @ 1.00pm Thurs. and Fri.\nWork is the Curse of the Drinking Classes\n\nby Neil Titley\nStarring Will Govan and directed by Rebecca O’Connor. \nSet in Paris in 1898\, Will Govan plays an exiled Oscar Wilde looking back on his extraordinarily colourful life and ruminating on love\, fame\, family and misfortune with his infamous wit and irreverence in this hilarious but ultimately tragic story of a life. \nThe play draws on Wilde’s letters\, essays and anecdotes to bring this literary genius to life in a 60-minute performance which will appeal as much to those who know little about the man as it will to those who admire his work. \nThis play has delighted audiences in hundreds of venues across the world\, including the USA\, Canada\, India\, Hong Kong\, Uruguay\, Zimbabwe\, Bahrain and Ethiopia. \n‘Titley balances Wilde’s almost dutiful humour with an unsentimental portrayal of his suffering in Reading Gaol\, his bitter perception of man’s inhumanity to man. He also captures his character’s dignity in despair and the comedy makes the heartbreak of Wilde’s life even more poignant. It is a most moving effect.’ – Evening Standard \n‘Funny and melancholic.’  – The Times \n‘Charming and witty.’ – Irish Times \n‘Fine and genuinely moving.’ – Festival Times\, Edinburgh \n‘I found myself finding out more about Wilde than any lecturer in an entire semester of school could teach. A highly intelligent piece of writing that I would gladly recommend.’ – Ontario Arts Review \nWill Govan grew up in the UK\, where he acted in several Shakespeare productions before choosing to study portrait painting at the Heatherley School of Fine Art in London. He is an artist and co-founder of The Moth. After a hiatus of seven years\, in which he interviewed the likes of Colm Tóibín\, Sally Rooney and Anne Enright for The Moth magazine\, he is returning to his first love\, reviving the award-winning Moth Productions theatre company to take on the role of Oscar Wilde in Work is the Curse of the Drinking Classes. \nNeil Titley was born in Inverness in Scotland. An actor and writer\, he spent his theatrical career concentrating on solo shows. He performed Work is the Curse of the Drinking Classes over 700 times in five continents before retiring in 2017. His play on George Bernard Shaw\, Shaw’s Corner\, was televised in over twenty countries. He is the author of The Oscar Wilde World of Gossip: A Subversive Encycolpaedia of Victorian Anecdote. \nRebecca O’Connor is an author and co-founder of The Moth. She was a member of the QUB Drama Society\, where she produced several plays. Her work has been shortlisted for the Irish Times Strong Shine Award and the Kate O’Brien Award\, and she was awarded the Geoffrey Dearmer Prize by Poetry Review. Her debut novel He Is Mine and I Have No Other was published in 2018: ‘A remarkable account of adolescent love in the 1990s\, backlit by the true story of 35 children who burned to death in a Cavan orphanage 50 years earlier’ (Critics Choice\, Irish Independent). \nTickets:\nLunchtime Show: €15 (including soup or sandwich); €12 (show only)\nEvening Show: €15 \nLunch will be served from 12 noon until ten minutes before performance time. \n*Booking fees apply. \n \n  \n
