The Coláiste Éamann Rís-based Cork company is staging a two-hour show of two one act plays – Shakespeare’s Macbeth & Romero – which highlight the threats and pitfalls of authoritarian rule. \nFirst on the bill is ‘Shakespeare’s Macbeth’: ‘A Macho ‘Macbeth!’ A Feminist ‘Macbeth!’ A ‘Macbeth Like No Other.’ This radical adaptation of the classic shines a new light on the great tragedy; featuring ambitious and power-hungry Macbeth\, the driven Lady Macbeth\, and the manipulative witches working behind the scenes\, humanised and portrayed here as deeply wronged women seeking revenge on all ‘men of power’. \nThe second one act play ‘Romero’\, written by Lorca’s artistic director Bill Sullivan\, is set in El Salvador in the 1970s.Three young Salvadoran women are swept up in the bloody events surrounding the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Romero – Ana who has fallen in love with young priest Pedro Morales; Elena\, married to a young and handsome army officer\, Raul Ortega; and Rita whose husband Carolos Rodriguez works in military intelligence. As Ana fears losing her love to the Church\, Elena grapples with the realisation of the persecution inflicted on the poor of El Salvador by the military junta\, and Rita is ordered by her husband to cut all contact with supporters of Archbishop Romero. However\, school has lost its allure. When the young people are in school they are overlooked and underestimated – seen as being more trouble than they are worth. First produced during Covid as a live podcast from the Everyman Stage\, later broadcast in a shortened version by RTE Radio Drama\, it is now having its first full production\, courtesy of Theatre Makers and Cork Arts Theatre. \nFrom all over Cork City\, one can see and hear Shandon steeple. But what if Shandon could see and hear us\, the inhabitants\, past and present\, waking or sleeping\, dreaming or drinking\, falling in love or falling down the stairs? DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 2nd to Saturday 6th December @ 8pm\n10 x 10 Minute Play Event\n\nCelebrating its 15th year\, our very popular\, 10 x 10 Minute Play Event is back with ten brand new short plays for you to enjoy. \nThe event has proved a great hit with audiences and performers alike over the years and\, once again\, we will have ten mini-plays each evening with something to suit all tastes. Audiences will also get to vote for their favourite play of the evening which adds to the sense of occasion. \nThis event\, established in 2010\, has grown from its humble beginnings to become one of the most popular shows in our annual programme. As in previous years\, we are sure that the final ten plays selected from hundreds of entries will prove to be wonderful examples of what can be achieved on stage in a short space of time with a well-crafted script. \nThe event is an important fund-raiser for the Cork Arts Theatre and it wouldn’t be possible without everyone – actors\, directors and crew – giving of their time so generously. We journey through the consequences of envy and the undercurrent of female competition that can permeate even our purest of relationships. DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 17th to Saturday 20th September @ 8pm\nplus Matinee – Saturday 20th @ 2pm\n\nDeath by Cues presents\nNo Exit: After Sartre\nDeath by Cues are proud to present No Exit: After Sartre as part of CATALYST\, a collaboration between Cork Arts Theatre and The Everyman. \n“Hell is other people.” \nJoseph Garcin\, Inèz Serrano\, and Estelle Rigault\, are brought to the same room in hell and locked inside by a mysterious Valet. \nThere they observe what happens on earth after their passing and try to adjust to their new reality. \nWhile the pacifist journalist Garcin and the high-society woman Estelle believe their damnation to be a mistake\, the postal clerk Inèz accepts their fate as justified. \nDespite their differing viewpoints\, it becomes apparent throughout the play that the three will not be tortured in hell in traditional ways but will pose as torturers to one another. \nNo Exit: After Sartre is a modern re-working of the darkly humorous drama which questions what happens after death and examines the significance of our existence through the lens of others. Does the life we live define our afterlife?
